Point of View

What did you learn about photography that you did not know before?
I learned the importance of light and shadow, that blur is not always bad, and that photography can change lives. To me, photography is just as important as any form of art. Through learning about other photographers and watching my peers progress, I was able to discover just how important it is, how important in can be.

What did you learn about yourself this semester?
I learned that I can surprise myself with my creativity. Occasionally, an idea would pop into my head that would make me wonder, "That idea is actually great. Where did that come from?"
Taking this class also reminded me of my issues with procrastination. I'm doing my best to work on that. :)

What do you wish we had done that we did not?
I wish we would have done more in the dark room. I understand that the chemicals required and photo paper are really expensive, but I would have been willing to pitch in. The summer before this semester began, I took a photography class that was entirely focused on film. I fell in love with the process, the challenge, the effort. I prefer developing this way, rather than digitally with Photoshop. With film, the photos are more real and concrete. You don't have any fancy effects. Anyone can click a button, but not anyone can get that perfect exposure using shutter speed, aperture, and the developing process.

What was your struggle?
I struggled with quite a few things during this semester. I procrastinate way too much because I expect too much from myself. I feel like every photo I take needs to be perfect, so I expect the worst. It wasn't until the end of the semester that I began to realize, all I need to do is hold up the camera and 'click.' The only thing limiting me is my self. By now, I've learned that imperfection is a good thing.

What did you conquer?
I think I did especially well with portraits. Not only was it really fun to have friends come over, do their makeup and hair, and dress them up; but it was a great learning experience. I learned that I prefer to be behind the camera. And it's great to work with another person, to have another person's say in what happens in the photo. I believe I used light and shadow well in those pictures, too.
Now, I believe I've conquered my fear of failure. It was a struggle, but I now realize that the more I over-think things, the more I hold myself back. Photography has taught me that it's okay to be imperfect, and it's okay to make mistakes. Trial and error, that's what it's all about.

I'd like to thank my teacher, Mr. Hohman, for allowing me to take this class as a freshman. I hope I proved how much I love photography, and I'm excited to take Photo II next year. :)
